The causeway between Hailuoto and the mainland opened to traffic on Monday, June 29, 2026—a few months ahead of the original target schedule.
This is one of Finland’s most significant infrastructure construction projects, which will replace a ferry service that has been in operation for nearly 60 years and improve access to Hailuoto for decades to come.
The approximately 8.4-kilometer-long fixed link consists of a 6.9-kilometer causeway and the Huiku and Riutu bridges. According to Rakennuslehti, the project’s work phases progressed faster than expected, which made it possible to open the link earlier than planned.
The project’s success is a testament to effective alliance collaboration, meticulous planning, and determined project management.

The causeway to Hailuoto will significantly improve the region’s accessibility, streamline passenger and freight traffic, and support the development of the region’s economy. Although traffic will shift to the new link at the end of June, finishing work is still underway before the project’s final completion.
