The management-by-objectives model developed by the Akseli Alliance, which is implementing the Koskela depot project, has won the construction industry’s 2026 Lean Initiative Award. The Akseli Alliance includes Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd, Skanska Infra Ltd, Skanska Building Construction Ltd, Sweco Finland Ltd, Sipti Infra Ltd, Rejlers Construction Ltd, and APRT Architects Ltd, with Kreate and Lujabetoni as partners. Boost Brothers Oy has been involved in the project as an expert on collaborative projects for the client and the alliance, starting with the development of the project strategy, and has been closely involved in developing the goal-oriented management model from the very first drafts.
The selection panel described the goal-based management model as a cross-functional management approach that integrates strategic goals with day-to-day operations.
In the model, the goals of the depot project are derived from the client’s goals, and each goal has a designated owner and a goal team. Progress toward the objectives is managed using a goal roadmap, a situational awareness platform, and regular monitoring on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. In addition, individual and company-level incentives are linked to the same objectives so that the entire alliance is steered in a common direction.
According to the selection panel, this model makes the goals visible, measurable, and continuously manageable.
The Koskela depot is one of the most important future investments in Helsinki’s light rail system. The project will renovate the old depot area to meet the rapidly growing needs of the capital region’s tram system for the coming decades. The project also aims for exceptionally ambitious environmental and sustainability goals, such as a BREEAM Outstanding rating.
The Lean Initiative Award is a significant recognition for the entire alliance and a testament to how open collaboration, systematic management, and commitment to shared goals are also reflected in the project’s results.
Boost’s responsibilities in the project have included, among other things, developing the project strategy, steering project planning, preparing and implementing alliance procurement, providing expert services for planning and collaboration during the development phase, leadership training, drafting the operational description of the depot, facilitating the alliance agreement process during the implementation phase, value-for-money reporting, and other collaborative expert tasks.
