The parties to the Vantaa light rail alliance signed the contract for the project’s second phase in May 2026. The contract covers the construction of the light rail line from the Aviation Museum to Länsimäentie, as well as related water supply and sewerage works. The Helsinki section of the project includes components of the electric rail system.
The Vantaa light rail project is the largest investment in the city’s history and a key step toward becoming a light rail city. The project will connect Mellunmäki, Hakunila, Tikkurila, Aviapolis, and Helsinki-Vantaa Airport with a new cross-town light rail line. At the same time, the street environment, bridges, and underground utility infrastructure will be upgraded.
Construction is proceeding in phases, carried out by two alliances. Service is scheduled to begin in 2029.
