Posiva’s ONKALO granted historic operating licence

On 22 October 2026, the Finnish Government granted Posiva an operating licence for the world’s first encapsulation and final disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel. The decision marks a major achievement for Finnish expertise and more than 40 years of dedicated work.

The operating licence for the ONKALO® final disposal facility, located in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki, represents a historic step towards the start of final disposal operations for spent nuclear fuel. The project has attracted widespread international interest and brought Finnish nuclear energy expertise into the global spotlight.

The granting of the operating licence does not yet mean that final disposal operations can begin. Additional approvals from the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) are still required before operations can commence.

Boost Brothers is involved in Posiva’s final disposal project as the client’s information management expert. We are proud to contribute to this internationally unique project.

“This is a remarkable achievement for Posiva and Finland as a whole! It is a privilege to be part of such a unique project. Warm congratulations to Posiva and everyone who has contributed to making this historic milestone possible,” says Kennet Lundström, Head of Industrial Projects at Boost Brothers.
