In preparation for the Turku tramway, it has been decided to move to the implementation planning phase. The procurement phase of the alliance is now underway, with Boost Brothers acting as the client’s procurement expert.
The Turku Tramway took a big step forward when the city government decided in early October 2023 to approve the master plan for the Port-Varissuo section as a basis for implementation planning.
– Together with the client, Turun Raitiotie Oy, we are preparing the material required by the Procurement Act, and we launched an alliance tender for the implementation of the tramway, says Maiju Hirvonen from Boost Brothers, who is the procurement expert on the project.
During the procurement phase of the Turku Tramway, Boost’s task is to ensure that the best possible partners are found for the project within the procurement schedule.
– Boost has considerable expertise in public procurement, alliance procurement and alliance development and implementation, and we will be able to use this experience also in the Turku Tramway project.
Boost is also involved in other ongoing alliance projects acting as the client’s expert, such as the Hailuoto Causeway project and the Koskela Depot project.
The tram will boost Turku’s urban development
The tramway is a major leap forward for Turku’s urban development. The tramway is seen as a strategic investment that supports the city’s objectives in terms of competitiveness, attractiveness and sustainable urban structure.
During the implementation planning phase, measures will be launched to develop and regenerate the residential areas along the tramway route. The aim is for example to improve service levels and increase the housing stock.
Implementation plan to be completed in 2025
A 12-kilometre route was chosen for the Port-Varissuo tramway, which will run from the Port along Humalistonkatu to Kauppatori, ending at Kraatarinkatu in Varissuo. A depot for the tram is planned at the end of Kiertotähdentie in Iso-Heikkilä area.
In addition, the project will continue to prepare cost and impact assessments. The final investment decision will be taken by the City Council on the basis of the tramway implementation plan, the refined impact assessments and the confirmed cost estimate. The investment decision is currently expected to be taken at the end of 2025.
